As we waited for fuel pick up lines to arrive from New Jersey, we decided to take the ferry over to Carriacou for New Year’s weekend. We have several friends that were in Carriacou so we knew we would have a gang for New Year’s Eve. We arrived at the ferry terminal in St. Georges at exactly 8:30am for the 9:00am ferry. Their website stated that in order to get on the 9:00am ferry, you had to arrive by 8:30am. Evidently, that only counts for those of us who can tell time. As we waited to board the ferry, the line of people arriving at 9:00am and after was out the door. At exactly 9:55am, the ferry pulled away from the dock. Gotta love island time! We are unaccustomed to having someone else drive us around on a boat. It was quite the treat to sit back and relax for a quick two hour jaunt and some dolphins made an appearance for some entertainment. Once we arrived in Carriacou, our friends met us at the terminal and the weekend of Eat Our Way to the New Year began. Carriacou is a much smaller island than Grenada but has a lot of restaurants and bars. Our New Year’s dinner was at the Paradise Beach Club located directly across from Sandy Island so the view was wonderful. It was a fixed menu and our main course choices were beef tenderloin, lobster or Red Snapper. As we were all trying to figure out what to get, the waiter announced that we were allowed to choose two of the entrees! We started with fish stew, followed by the main course and then dessert of black cake and ice cream. I was not a fan of the black cake which is a tradition on the island. It was much like a fruitcake brownie which was odd but the ice cream was delicious! During dinner, we were entertained by a local singer who performed all American hits from the 80s, 90s and 2000s so it quickly became a karaoke event in the bar. After dinner, we piled back into the jeep (six adults in a jeep built for four but you gotta do what you gotta do!) and made our way back to our Airbnb. Our friends have been living in the Airbnb since June so they were able to get the duplex next door for us for the weekend. That was a plus. The minus was that the duplex was only a few steps away from all the local bars. Now, in my younger days, that would have been a plus….in my older years, not so much. The New Year’s celebration went well into the early morning hours so we were up to ring in 2022 whether we wanted to be or not!
The next day, we all piled back into the jeep and made our way over the mountain to a town called Bogle. Our first stop was at a cemetery that was located directly on the beach. As you may know, I love cemeteries. This cemetery ranked in the top 10 I have seen and was one of the most unique. The waves had crushed many of the graves and they were slowly inching their way into the ocean. The amazing part was that the islanders were still burying people in the cemetery as late as 2014…even with the earlier graves sinking into the sea. I suppose if you live on an island, you just expect the sea to win eventually. After the island tour, we had dinner reservations at Bogles Round House. It was neither round nor a house but we went with it. The food choices were amazing and were not like the usual fare that we get on Grenada. They had lamb, fish, pork belly and many other unique choices. I had Thai shrimp that was delicious and everyone finished off the meal with more ice cream. We were not lacking in calories for the weekend! After a wonderful time in Carriacou, we ferried back over to Grenada to await the arrival of our fuel lines. We are hopeful they will arrive tomorrow and be easily installed so we can get on the move this week! Fingers crossed that by next blog, we will be in Carriacou once again….this time on Galt!
